Course Objectives
- To develop proficiency in pattern-making software with advanced functionality and process engineering for accurate pattern building
- To enable students to create bespoke grade rules and apply automatic grading across multiple sizes
- To develop skill in marker nesting and layout optimization for every style conceived
- To familiarize students with tailor editing and made-to-measure workflows using scanned or keyed-in customer measurements
- To develop competence in generating industrial reports for costing, yield, and production planning
- To introduce digital sampling and virtual fit review as a substitute for physical sample rounds ahead of buyer approval, delivered through a cost-viable mix of institutional and free-trial resources
Course Outcomes
- Be able to build and grade patterns digitally using standard measurement charts and cutter & specifications
- Be able to create efficient markers, including stripe/plaid matching and CNC-ready cut paths
- Be able to apply tailor editing functions to fit a pattern to individual customer measurements
- Be able to generate industrial-standard reports for weight, yield, cost, and time from marker files
- Be able to import a graded 2D pattern into a 3D visualizer, apply virtual fabric properties, and review fit on a virtual model, on whichever available platform (TUKA3D, Marvelous Designer, or CLO3D)
- Be able to compare virtual sample turnaround against physical sample turnaround as a cost and time decision
Course Content
Unit-1: PATTERN MAKING AND GRADING
- Measurement chart, pattern card and cutter's must
- Before and after wash shrinkage
- Integration of art work and logos
- Yield reports with costing
- Adobe PDF plot format
- Multiple sizes grading with automatic half size creation
- Angle grading for curved contours
- Block libraries with master grading
- Automatic grading update with pattern changes
Unit-2: MARKER MAKING
- Manual or automatic marker making
- Stripe and plaid matching (with image view)
- Merge pattern pieces and marker for efficient result
- Dynamic blocking and measuring functions
- Call up additional pieces or complete sizes
- Create and edit cut path for CNC cutters
- Edit or alter patterns while making markers
- Add buffers during marking at selected segments of patterns for quality cutting
Unit-3: TAILOR EDITING
- Import or key in body scanned measurements
- Find closest size from standard size ranges
- Automatically see differences between the customer and chosen size measurements
- Generate XML file for trial done by customer
- Maintaining history of a particular customer's pattern file
- Create template for various fits allowances
Unit-4: INDUSTRIAL EDITION
- Create single Excel report for multiple markers
- Generate weight and yield report
- Send marker files to plotters and cutters
- Generate PDF file of markers
- Generate Excel report for weight, cost and time calculations
Unit-5: DIGITAL SAMPLING AND VIRTUAL FIT
- Concept and theory: role of digital sampling in reducing physical sample rounds, taught via
- TAPE & free online video modules and TUKA3D's own tutorial channel, no license required for this portion
- Importing a graded 2D pattern into a 3D visualizer: demonstrated on one institutional
- TUKA3D single-seat license or trial license, faculty-led, batch rotation for hands-on time
- Assigning virtual fabric properties (drape, weight, stretch, texture mapping): practiced individually on a free trial license of an alternative 3D garment simulation tool (Marvelous
- Designer 30-day free trial, or CLO3D trial), scheduled so each student's practice window falls inside the trial period
- Digital stitching and seam assignment on a virtual avatar: practiced on the same trial tool as above, concept is transferable across TUKA3D, Marvelous Designer, and CLO3D since all three use the same 2D-pattern-to-3D-avatar principle
- Reviewing virtual fit on a standard fit model: identifying pull lines, excess ease, drag, and grain distortion
- Recording fit comments directly on the virtual sample in place of a physical fit sample round
- Exporting a virtual fit report and turntable/still images for buyer or merchandiser review, submitted as the graded deliverable regardless of which software produced it
- One-day exposure visit to a local export house or CAD bureau already running a licensed
- TUKA3D setup, in place of individual student licensing, tied to the existing Suggested Visits category
