Water Pollution: Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), heavy metals, suspended solids, dissolved solids, process chemicals, oil and grease. Land Pollution: Overburden, waste rock, tailings, hazardous waste, soil degradation, land subsidence.

Biodiversity Impacts: Habitat destruction, fragmentation, loss of flora and fauna, invasive species.

Environmental Impacts of Mining: Impact on air quality, human health, and climate. Impact on surface water and groundwater quality and quantity. Impact on soil fertility, land stability, and landscape aesthetics. Impact on ecosystems, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. Basic Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in Mining: Purpose and components of EIA for mining projects. Baseline data collection and impact prediction (conceptual overview).

UNIT-2: MINE WATER MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT

Mine Hydrology and Hydrogeology: Impact of mining on surface and groundwater regimes. Water balance in mining areas. Dewatering techniques for open-pit and underground mines. Water conservation strategies: Rainwater harvesting, water recycling and reuse. Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Management: AMD Formation: Pyrite oxidation, role of bacteria, chemical reactions.

Prediction of AMD: Static and Kinetic tests (conceptual). AMD Prevention Techniques:

Encapsulation of reactive wastes, dry covers, anoxic limestone drains (ALD), passive reactive barriers. Mine Water Treatment Technologies: Active Treatment: Neutralization (lime, caustic soda), precipitation of heavy metals, coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation. Passive Treatment:

Constructed wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity producing systems (SAPS), bioreactors. Advanced Treatment: Membrane filtration (RO, UF), ion exchange, adsorption (conceptual). Tailings Dam Safety and Management: Types of tailings dams and their construction. Causes of tailings dam failures (liquefaction, overtopping, foundation failure).

Design considerations for stability and environmental protection. Monitoring and surveillance of tailings storage facilities.

UNIT 3: MINE AIR QUALITY, VENTILATION, AND NOISE CONTROL

Mine Air Pollutants and Health Impacts: Dust: Types (respirable, inhalable), sources (drilling, blasting, crushing, haulage), health effects (pneumoconiosis). Gases: Methane (CH4), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), NOx, SOx, Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S). Sources of gases:

Blasting, diesel engines, spontaneous combustion, strata gases. Physiological effects of mine gases. Mine Ventilation Principles: Objectives of mine ventilation: Dilution of pollutants, temperature control, provision of fresh air. Dust Control Measures: Prevention: Wet drilling, water infusion, proper blasting techniques. Suppression: Water spraying, chemical suppressants, dust collectors (wet scrubbers, bag filters). Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Respirators. Dust sampling and monitoring. Mine Gas Control and Fire Management: Gas Drainage: Methane drainage systems. Dilution and Removal: Ventilation strategies. Spontaneous Combustion:
