Course Outcome: After the end of the course the student will be able to
- Students will be able to analyze global coal production and utilization trends, understanding the impact of coal quality on the selection of eco-friendly utilization methods.
- Students will gain proficiency in evaluating the necessity, scope, and environmental implications of pre-combustion coal cleaning technologies, including their principles, operations, and performance assessment.
- Students will comprehend the principles, operating features, and environmental benefits/challenges of various clean coal combustion and post-combustion technologies, enabling their selection and performance evaluation.
- Students will be able to characterize, assess the impact of, and propose effective control, treatment, disposal, and utilization strategies for wastes and pollutants generated throughout the coal utilization process.
UNIT-1 Coal Utilization:
Coal production and utilization trends. Status of coal utilization technology and related operating and environmental problems. Coal qualities and their effect on selection of efficient methods for eco-friendly utilization of coal.
UNIT-2 Pre-Combustion Technology:
Necessity, scope and limitations of pre-combustion coal cleaning technology. Washability characteristics and preparation problems related to coal quality. Principles, operations and selection of processes for coal preparation. Plant performance evaluation and forecasting of cleaning results. Environmental problems and related mitigating measures.
UNIT-3 Combustion and Post-Combustion Technology:
Necessity, scope and limitations of combustion and post-combustion clean coal technologies.
Developments, basic principles, operating features of clean coal technologies. Selection, performance and related environmental problems and their control.
UNIT-4 Carbon Utilization, Storage, and Policy Aspects:
Carbon Dioxide Utilization (CDU): Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) using CO2. Mineral carbonation. Biological utilization, Carbon Dioxide Storage (CCS - Storage): Geological storage options: Saline aquifers, unmineable coal seams. Storage mechanisms: Structural, residual, solubility, mineral trapping, Integrated CCUS Systems and Policy: Techno-economic analysis of CCUS projects. Cost of electricity from CCUS power plants. Government policies, incentives, and regulations for clean coal and CCUS. Future outlook and research directions in clean coal technology.
