Course Objectives
- To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and applications of liquid-liquid extraction and leaching processes in separating components from mixtures.
- To introduce students to the fundamentals of adsorption, including types of adsorbents, adsorption isotherms, and industrial applications of adsorption in gas and liquid phase separations.
- To impart knowledge on humidification, and types of various humidifiers and dehumidifiers.
- To familiarize students with the concepts of crystallization, crystal growth, nucleation, and the design and operation of crystallizers for industrial applications.
- To teach students the design, analysis, and optimization of mass transfer equipment for liquid-liquid extraction, leaching, adsorption, humidification, and crystallization.
Course Outcomes
Students completing the course will be able to:
- Explain the principles of liquid-liquid extraction, including phase equilibrium, distribution coefficient, selectivity, and choice of solvents, and apply them to solve separation problems.
- Analyze and design equipment for liquid-liquid extraction (mixer-settlers, packed and spray columns) and leaching (agitated vessels, percolation tanks) based on operating parameters, efficiency, and process requirements.
- Understand adsorption theories, including Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms, and design adsorption systems for gas and liquid phase separations, considering adsorbent selection, breakthrough curves, and regeneration techniques.
- Analyze humidification and dehumidification processes.
- Explain the principles of crystallization, including nucleation, crystal growth, and supersaturation, and design crystallization equipment such as batch and continuous crystallizers for separation and purification processes.
- Evaluate and compare the performance of various mass transfer equipment used in liquid-liquid extraction, leaching, adsorption, humidification, and crystallization processes. REFERENCEBOOKS:
