Course Objectives
- To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of mass transfer and the various mechanisms involved in mass transport processes.
- To impart knowledge on molecular diffusion, convective mass transfer, and the determination of mass transfer coefficients in various phases.
- To develop the ability to analyze and design equilibrium-based separation processes such as distillation, absorption, and drying.
- To introduce students to the design and operational aspects of mass transfer equipment like distillation columns, packed towers, and tray towers.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of the fundamental concepts of mass transfer, including diffusion, mass transfer coefficients, and the concept of driving force in mass transport processes.
- Analyze and solve problems related to mass transfer operations like distillation.
- Analyze the absorption phenomenon using both theoretical and empirical approaches.
- Design and optimize simple equilibrium-staged separation processes, such as binary distillation and absorption columns, considering energy efficiency and cost..
- Calculate mass transfer rates in various systems and determine mass transfer coefficients using appropriate correlations and experimental data.
- Analyze the drying phenomenon. REFERENCEBOOKS:
