Course Objectives

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the petroleum industry, including its structure, types of crude oil, and the composition and properties of various refinery feedstocks.
  • Gain insight into the essential processes and units involved in refining crude oil, covering desalting, distillation, dehydration, fractionation, and separation of key petroleum products.
  • Explore advanced refining techniques such as cracking (thermal, hydro, catalytic), coking processes (delayed, flexi, fluid), and calcinations, along with processes for sulfur removal and enhancement (reforming, isomerization, alkylation, polymerization, hydro desulfurization).
  • Acquire knowledge of safety protocols and environmental regulations governing refining operations, while also exploring emerging technologies shaping the future of petroleum refining.
  • Analyze future trends in the industry, including the shift towards renewable fuels, the development of the hydrogen economy, and the adoption of sustainable practices, to prepare for evolving challenges and opportunities. COURSEOUTCOME: On successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the petroleum industry, and develop insights into refining processes, units, and key environmental and safety considerations.
  • Proficiency in Crude Oil Distillation principles and acquire skills in distillation operations.
  • Understand the role of each process in transforming crude oil into valuable products.
  • Acquire skills to integrate treating processes for emission reduction.
  • Explore emerging technologies in petroleum refining and critically evaluate future trends, including renewable fuels, the hydrogen economy, and sustainable practices. REFERENCEBOOKS:
