Course Objectives

  • Understand the composition of petroleum and its major classes of products (fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals), alongside the significance of characterization in the industry and adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Explore key properties of petroleum products including vapor pressure, octane number, viscosity, and sulfur content, and master elemental analysis techniques essential for quality assessment.
  • Familiarize with international standards such as ASTM and ISO for petroleum testing, and learn about various analytical techniques like IR, UV-Vis, GC, LC, NMR, and XRD used in quality control.
  • Gain proficiency in measuring density, viscosity, surface tension, and other properties crucial for quality evaluation, along with testing methods for oxidation and thermal stability of lubricants and additives.
  • Dive into advanced analyses of petroleum components like olefins, aromatics, and alkanes, and understand polymer characterization methods, wax properties, and quality control measures for specialty chemicals, utilizing cutting-edge petrochemical characterization techniques.

Course Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Comprehensive understanding of petroleum composition.
  • Understand the significance of aromatics, olefins quantification, and thermal stability testing.
  • Gain in-depth knowledgequality control and characterization techniques.
  • Expertise in lubricants and lubricant additives characterization.
  • Proficient in characterizing petroleum products. REFERENCEBOOKS:
