Course Outcome:This course will enable students CO1. To conductgeotechnical site investigation, sampling and field tests on soil.
CO2. To conduct soil exploration for projects.
CO3. To evaluate the stress at depth during design of foundations.
CO4. To design the raft foundation for buildings and tower structures.
CO5. To conclude the bearing capacity of soil from SPT and SCPT and plate load test data.
| Unit-1 | Introduction: Role of civil engineer in the selection, design and construction of foundation of civil engineering structures, brief review of soil mechanics principles used in foundation engineering. Foundations:examples of foundation problems - case studies, Characterization of ground Sampling: Source of disturbance and their influence. Type of sampler, Principle of design of sampler, Representative and undisturbed sampling in various types of soils. Surface sampling, Amount of sampling, Boring and sampling record, Preservation and shipment of sample preparation of bore log. | 8 |
| Unit-2 | Introduction: Necessity and Importance of soil exploration, Method of sub surface exploration Test pits, Trenches, Caissons, Tunnels and drifts, Wash boring, Percussion drilling, Rotary drilling, Factors affecting the selection of a suitable method of boring. Extent of boring, Factors controlling spacing and depth of bore holes, Spacing and depth of various Civil engineering structures. | 8 |
