Course Objectives

  1. To enable the students to learn about the construction of fabrics and evaluation of fabric properties and their importance.
  2. To enable the students to learn about the Tensile strength measurement, Tear strength, Bursting strength and its measurement.
  3. To enable the students to learn about the Fabric stiffness, Drape ability, Crease recovery, Wrinkle recovery, Fabric abrasion resistance, Fabric pilling resistance.
  4. To enable the students to learn about hysteresis; compression and decompression; surface roughness and friction measurements; Textile product leveling; Uster standards, AITCC, JIS and ASTM.
  5. To enable the students to learn about Fabric inspection, classification of fabric defects, MIL standards and final inspection, Colour matching, Analysis of KES and FAST data.
UnitTopicsLectures
IBasic fabric particulars – Measurement of ends and picks per inch, count of warp and weft, determination of the type of weave, measurement of length, width, thickness and Area density (GSM); warp and weft crimp measurements for spun and filament yarn fabrics, the cover factor calculations; Fabric sampling techniques.12
IITensile strength measurement – raveled strip test and grab test – mechanical and electronic measuring systems. Tear strength – importance – measuring systems. Bursting strength and its measurement. Ballistic impact strength. Universal tensile tester - principle and operation.12
IIIFabric stiffness – principle of measurement of flexural rigidity; Drapability – measurement of drape coefficient; Crease recovery measurement techniques. Wrinkle recovery assessment using standard grades; Principle and functioning of air permeability testers, water repellency, contact angle and fabric shrinkage testing; Fabric abrasion resistance – measuring technique; Fabric pilling resistance – methods of determination.12
IVFabric bending hysteresis testing; Shear hysteresis measurements; Fabric compression and decompression behavior; Fabric surface roughness and friction measurements; Fabric tensile hysteresis measurements; Fabric flame resistance testing methods; Moisture and thermal characteristics. Textile product leveling. International quality parameters and standards like Uster standards, AITCC, JIS and ASTM.12
VFabric inspection – Manual, semi-automatic and Automatic Inspection systems, classification of fabric defects, independent product quality certification, acceptable quality level, MIL standards and final inspection. Quality assessment of garments - cutting, sewing, pressing, finishing and packaging defects. Assessment of comfort, Colour matching, Analysis of KES and FAST data.12

Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the students will be able: -

  1. To evaluate the constructional parameters of fabrics.
  2. To analyze the tensile strength of fabrics.
  3. To evaluate low stress mechanical properties of fabric.
  4. To elaborate the quality parameters and standards like Uster standards, AITCC, JIS and ASTM.
  5. To explain the quality assessment of fabrics and garment.
